Depicting winged beauties

Jishnu vividly recollects the day when he received his first International recognition as a three year old. It was a painting competition held in Washington in the United States. The topic was ‘neuroscience for kids.’ After filling up the online application form with the help of his father, Vishnu sent his painting by post to the organisers of the competition.

After a few weeks of anxious wait, Jishnu received a congratulatory message from the organisers along with the prize — a book on neuroscience.

Seven years later, Jishnu, now a class IV student of Christ Nagar School, Kowdiar, has around 1,000 paintings to his credit and has won over 250 prizes at various State and national level competitions. However it is the paintings on birds that are his favourite. According to his father Baiju G.S., an employee working with a private firm in the city, almost all his paintings will have the image of a bird. Jishnu has nearly 150 paintings on birds alone and prefers to spend his leisure time watching Animal Planet, Discovery and National Geographic. But then painting is not his only passion. Jishnu has an impressive collection of nests and feathers of birds. He is also an active member of the Caged Bird Society based in the city. A three-day exhibition of his paintings focusing on the theme of birds was held here at the Museum auditorium recently.

A student of painting at Chithrakalamandalam, Jishnu had been supported all along by the institute in his artistic pursuits. “I want become an artist when I grow up,” says Jishnu without any hesitation when asked what his ambition in life was. His school has now launched a website www.jishnuvishnu.com for Jishnu and his brother Vishnu, who is also a student of the school.
