TAMBARAM: Three of Kollywood’s leading stars have come together to express their support to ensure that no child in the school going age is deprived of classroom education. On a mercilessly hot day, scores of workers and residents of Tirusulam descended at a stone quarry where actor Surya repeated his steps as film director Priya (‘Kanda Naal Muthal’ and ‘Kannamoochi Yenada’) passed on instructions on a megaphone. Surya was not joined by a glamorous on-screen companion, but some dusty, scantily clad young boys. And recording them on camera was well-known cinematographer K.V. Anand. They were all in Tirusulam as part of a film being produced to promote universal education. The School Education Department would soon launch the film as part of its annual school enrolment drive. Officials of the School Education Department said apart from Surya, actors Madhavan and Vijay had also promised to be part of the project. They added the film was being produced by Agaram Foundation, of which Surya is the chairman. The idea behind the film was to encourage daily wage earner parents, such as those employed in quarries, to send their children to school. Their financial status should not come in the way of their children’s education. And when actors take this message to the masses, it is expected to have its own appeal, they said. The location of the shooting was significant considering that Tirusulam and adjoining Moovarasampettai were among the most backward regions in the southern suburbs of Chennai. The rate of school dropouts and ‘out of school children’ was higher in these two pockets than other villages that came under the St. Thomas Mount Block (also called Panchayat Union). Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan officials have commenced the enrolment drive for the coming academic year. The status of ‘out of school children’ would be known after the drive was completed.
