PUDUCHERRY: For the last several years, residents of Ashok Nagar at Lawspet have been demanding the revival of two parks in their locality, but to no avail.

According to members of various residential associations in Ashok Nagar, one of the oldest housing colonies in Puducherry, two areas were earmarked for parks in the master plan prepared by the Pondicherry Housing Board.

At the time of development of the area, the sites on the eastern and western side of the colony were handed over to the Agriculture Department for setting up the parks. But they were in turn converted into nurseries.

The residents said they had been demanding revival of the park project for the last 20 years.

Since there was no other suitable place for children and elders for rest and recreation, the government should consider reviving the project, said a resident of Bharathiar Salai.

“There is a children’s park at Airport Road. Of late, it has become crowded. On weekends many children go back disappointed owing to lack of space,” said a resident of Periyar Street in Ashok Nagar.

They said there were about 700 houses in Ashok Nagar, and it had become extremely difficult for children to find a proper place for playing.

“We have a large number of senior citizens in the area and it would be of great help to them if the park was opened,” said another member.

The residents also suggested that at least one of the sites now being used for “social forest nursery” could be converted into a park.
