Pensioners’ woes

The Central Government pensions are being dispersed through banks, mostly by the State Bank of India. The banks are busy with their own work and every time the dearness relief rates are revised, the banks take at least four months to give effect to the order. This is inconveniencing the senior citizens.

Hence, the authorities are requested to see that the effect of enhancement is given, latest by the second month after the issue of the order.

Welcome step

This refers to the report “YSR assures aid for farmers” The Hindu dated 13/04. The State Government’s pro-farmers and pro-poor programmes are commendable and worthy of emulation.

Though the ryots’ suicide rate has decreased enormously, reports of some ryots resorting to this extreme step keep trickling in. Therefore the Government should analyse their problems and take steps to solve them.

Preserving heritage

Kudos to Chief Minister Y.S.Rajasekhara Reddy for sanctioning Rs.27.70 crore to develop 19 historical and religious places in Kadapa district into tourism centres (The Hindu March 19). Rayalaseema is endowed with rich historical places like forts and temples built by Vijayanagara rulers. Unfortunately the tourist places are either subjected to the acts of vandalism or under the illegal occupation of anti social elements. The tourism potential in this region is not fully exploited. I appeal to the universities in the State to introduce travel and tourism as a subject to create more awareness about the preservation and protection of heritage monuments.

K.Maddaiah,

Kurnool
