Jalandhar: Admitting that there was free flow of narcotics in the some of the jails in the state, Punjab Jail Minister Heera Singh Gabria on Sunday said efforts were on to curb the menace and construction of modernised jails in the State would begin by October this year. “It has come to light that in some of the jails in Punjab, there is free flow of narcotics with the connivance of jail staff and some of the officials have been identified for such kind of nexus and were being transferred to break it” Mr. Gabria told reporters. He said construction of two big modernised jails in the districts of Kapurthala and Faridkot would begin by October this year and meanwhile Rs.30 crore was being spent on the repair on the existing jails in the State. “Total 11 new jails would be constructed in the State, out of which construction of Nabha jail has already been initiated,” he said, adding that even the draft for amending the existing Jail Act was being prepared and would be sent to the Cabinet soon. — PTI
