DHARWAD: The third national-level art camp on the life and teachings of 12th Century social reformer Basaveshwara, in which 12 artists from across the State and neighbouring States participated, concluded here on Sunday.

The 12 paintings that took shape during the six-day camp were on display at Dr. Mallikarjun Mansur Kalabhavan here.

Artists A.B.N. Joseph (Kerala); Ramachandra Karatmal (Pune); U. Bhaskarrao, S. Pralhad and R. Soori of Bangalore; S.S. Simpi (Gulbarga); P.S. Kademani (Bijapur); D. Vishwanath (Hubli); Suresh Halabhavi (Dharwad); Sunilkumar V. Mathad (Chinchani); U. Rameshrao (Udupi) and K. Gangadhar (Basavana Bagewadi) participated in the camp.

Addressing the gathering at the valedictory ceremony, Siddheshwara Swamiji of Jnana Yogashrama of Bijapur said that it was difficult to transform the life and teachings of great personalities such as Basaveshwara into paintings.

Imagining what might have happened during the social revolution initiated by Basaveshwara and giving graphic expression to it was a great task, he said.

The swamiji stressed the need for putting the ideology of Basaveshwara into practice apart from talking about it.

The swamiji elaborated on how art could be used to bring about change in society.

Lauded

President of the Basava Samiti, Bangalore, Aravind Jatti lauded the effort of “Bellad Shikshana and Krishi Pratishthana” in taking Basaveshwara’s teachings to people through paintings.

The former professor Mumtaz Ali Khan said there was a need to spread awareness on the “kayakave kailasa” (work is heaven) concept advocated by Basaveshwara.

Mr. Rameshrao shared his experiences at the camp.

Chairman of Dr. D.R. Bendre National Memorial Trust presided over the function. President of the foundation Chandrakant Bellad welcomed the gathering and made introductory remarks. The 12 artists were felicitated.
