Residents of 43 habitations in four panchayats to be benefited

PUDUKOTTAI: Supply of drinking water will be augmented in four village panchayats in the district, thanks to the implementation of the Comprehensive Water Supply Scheme at an outlay of Rs.1.70 crore. The scheme, which was taken up recently, will be completed by the end of this financial year.
Residents of 43 habitations – 23 in Pudukottai village panchayat; 12 in 9A Nathampannai; five in 9B Nathampannai and three in Kavinadu West village panchayat will get additional drinking water, according to the District Collector D. Uthirakkumaran.
Once the scheme is completed, each villager will get their due share of 40 litres per capita per day (lpcd). In all, 14,421 villagers will benefit through the scheme.
Presently, water is being supplied to these habitations from out of the bore-wells sunk in rocky surface. “Due to monsoon failure and consequent depletion in water-table, the yield from these sources has been poor,” the Collector said.
To manage the crisis, a special programme was taken up to draw the water from the Cauvery.
30 overhead tanks
The Executive Engineer, Tamil Nadu Water Supply and Drainage Board, C.V. Rajan, said that water would be supplied through 30 overhead tanks (OHTs) including 25 existing tanks and five new ones. A collection sump with a capacity of 3 lakh litres has been constructed at Ellaipatti village along with a booster sump.
