The Government has gone ahead in rewarding the policemen with medals and promotions
Seeking justice: The procession taken out by tribals in Sathyamangalam on Sunday. — SATHYAMANGALAM: Sathyamangalam police on Sunday arrested over 200 persons who tried to march to Chennai to draw the State Government’s attention to implement the findings of Justice Sadashiva Commission of Inquiry. The Commission probed allegations of excesses by Special Task Force (STF) personnel against tribals and other forest-dwellers during search operations to nab forest brigand Veerappan. The police arrested 211 persons, including 87 women, for taking out the procession without permission. The arrested include affected tribals, members of the Tamil Nadu Pazhangudi Makkal Sangam, an organisation of tribals, Communist Party of India, among others. Speaking on the occasion, D. Pandian, State secretary of CPI, said the State Government should act against policemen who committed atrocities against tribals and others. “While payment of interim relief, as suggested by the Commission, to a few of the affected people was a welcome move, the absence of action against policemen found guilty hurt the tribals.” ApologyMr. Pandian demanded at least minimum punishment for the policemen and suggested that even a public apology would do. Instead, the Government had gone ahead in rewarding the policemen with medals and promotions, he pointed out. As regards the disbursement of compensation awarded by the Justice Sadashiva Commission, the State Secretary said the Tamil Nadu and Karnataka Governments were yet to provide the relief to 13 persons, which amounted to Rs. 61 lakh. He wanted the two governments to provide relief to all the affected people and expedite cases pending against tribals and others in courts in Gobichettipalayam, Sathyamangalam, Chamarajanagar and Mysore. The Tamil Nadu Pazhangudi Makkal Sangam demanded action against police personnel for the excesses and compensation for 72 affected persons who were still facing trial in courts.
