BANGALORE: The Lawyers’ Forum for Social Justice has welcomed the recent Supreme Court verdict on reservation for Other Backward Classes (OBCs) in Central higher education institutions. In a release, the forum said that the verdict upholding the 93rd amendment to the Constitution was historic and that it would put an end to the monopoly of upper castes in institutions of higher learning. The Nehru and Indira Gandhi Governments had meted out gross injustice to the backward classes by not implementing recommendations for reservation, it said. The lawyers’ form termed as “unfortunate” the move to exclude the creamy layer among the backward classes from reservation. The forum demanded that the Centre provide reservation for Other Backward Classes in all Central institutions from the current academic year itself. It also wanted the Centre redefine the concept of the creamy layer.
