Dalits stage dharna

TIRUNELVELI: Demanding implementation of Protection of Civil Rights Act to safeguard the Dalits from the “suppressive upper castes” and immediate filling up of backlog vacancies meant for the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe candidates, members of Dalit forums organised a dharna here on Saturday.
They said the official machinery, particularly the police, were not for executing this Act whenever basic rights of the Dalits were challenged or members of the “oppressed community” were subjected to cruelty.
Even if provisions of this Act were invoked against the offenders, the perpetrators could get anticipatory bail easily.
Moreover, over 1 lakh backlog vacancies meant for the Dalits have not been filled up even after several representations had been given to the State and Central Governments, they alleged.
