“Release 2,000 cusecs from Mettur dam”
Special Correspondent
TIRUCHI: The Tiruchi District Cauvery Delta Farmers Welfare Association has appealed to the State Government to ensure the strict implementation of its order on the release of water from the Mettur Reservoir during the summer.
Though the Government has ordered that 2,000 cusecs of water should be released during the non-Mettur season (between January 28 and June 11), only 800 to 1,200 cusecs was being released from the reservoir now. This has adversely affected farmers dependent on the summer water release.
Standing crops in over 40,000 acres, including banana and sugarcane, were withering in the severe summer as farmers were not getting adequate water for irrigation, especially in the tail-end areas, the association said after an emergency executive committee meeting at Lalgudi on Saturday to take stock of the situation. The meeting was chaired by the district president G.Kanagasabai.
The Government should direct the Public Works Department (PWD) to draw the full quantum of 2,000 cusecs allowed till the opening of the Mettur Reservoir on June 12, a resolution adopted at the meeting said.
