500 houses gutted, five children missing

BEGUSARAI: Five children went missing and properties worth several lakhs of rupees gutted when a devastating fire destroyed around 500 thatched houses at some villages in Begusarai district on Sunday.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (Balia) Md. Kasim told PTI that the cause of fire was yet to be established.

Five children were missing from these villages with policemen trying to locate whether they were dead or alive, Mr. Kasim added.

The fire broke out at Laldiara village and supported by westerly wind, it spread to Jagdishpur, Sharmanandpur and Pankaha destroying around 500 thatched houses in the afternoon.

Villagers chip in

The fire was extinguished with the help of fire-tenders rushed from here and the villagers also helped in putting off the fire, he said.

Properties worth several lakhs of rupees were believed to have been perished in the fire, the DSP said. — PTI
