NEW DELHI: Tahir Mahmood, member of the Law Commission of India and former chairperson of the National Minorities Commission, has sought intervention of Pakistan’s Islamic Ideology Council to get Sarabjit Singh’s mercy plea accepted by President Pervez Musharraf. In a communication to the Council chairman Mohammad Khalid Masood, Dr. Mahmood has said that Sarabjit’s case “merits the Council’s intervention.” The Council was established in 1973 under Articles 228-31 of the Pakistan Constitution to advise the Government on Islamic matters. Two years ago, an 11-member International Advisory Board consisting of world’s leading specialists on Islamic law was constituted for the Council to assist it in academic matters. Dr. Mahmood is a member of this Board. Reminding the Council of “the remarkable liberalism found under the Islamic criminal law in the matter of granting clemency and showing mercy to persons accused of having committed criminal acts,” Dr. Mahmood said that ``Council’s generous intervention in Sarabjit’s case will go a long way in furthering still better fraternal relations between our two beloved countries.”
