KOCHI: Kerala Agro Machinery Corporation Limited (Kamco), a fully owned undertaking of the Kerala government, is planning to introduce power reapers suitable for the paddy fields of the State. Kamco chairman V. Chamunny said research and development was in progress for developing reapers for harvest operations in ‘Pokkali’ fields. The company was also taking steps for making small tractors and sprayers. Kamco started earning profits since 1984-85. The company sold more than 8,932 power tillers and 1,154 power reapers in 2007-08. The turnover of the company exceeded Rs.100 crore, he said. The power reapers being sold by the company were ideal for dry fields and the major markets were in States such as West Bengal and Assam. The harvesters brought from neighbouring States for use in Kuttanad and other areas were entirely different from Kamco’s product. While Kamco’s reapers were priced at Rs.56,000, the price of the harvesters were atleast Rs.20 lakh, he pointed out. As part of the mechanisation drive, local bodies purchase farm machines for distribution to beneficiaries. The State government had recently issued a circular directing to accord priority to Kamco’s products, Mr. Chamunni said. Kamco managing director S.M. Raghunathan was also present.
