Sir, — The authorities concerned should ensure that the HAL Airport is retained for short-haul operations. Passengers using HAL Airport will gladly pay Rs. 300 a ticket to be passed on to BIAL for compensating it for the loss of revenue. All segments of society will benefit. BIAL will be a viable airport. They can use this spare capacity to meet the increased traffic projected. Passengers will save Rs. 500 a journey for going to Devanahalli besides the travel time. Traffic congestion, pollution and fuel consumption can also be reduced. N.S. Ramaswamy, Bangalore Check backgroundSir, — The reported absence of activities by anti-social elements in Bangalore, who are otherwise engaged in election politics, is intriguing. The Election Commission should instruct officials to meticulously check the background of candidates while filing nominations to prevent anti-social elements from contesting the polls. V.S. Ganeshan, Akron, U.S. Asphalt roadSir, — The Shirdi Sai Baba Temple Road (Kundanahalli Gate, Green Garden Layout), near the junction of Marthahalli Bridge Road, ITPL Road and Varthur Road, is in bad shape. This road is not asphalted and is uneven with loose soil. Residents are suffering as passing vehicles rake up a lot of dust. During rainy days, the road becomes slushy and slippery. It is time the concerned authorities got the road repaired. Omkarnath Singh, Bangalore
