BERHAMPUR: The liberalization being promoted by our government and armchair economists has shattered the dreams of liberation of martyrs like Saheed Laxman Nayak, said Asim Dasgupta, the finance minister of West Bengal. Mr Dasgupta, who also happens to be a noted economist, was delivering the Saheed Laxman Nayak memorial lecture at a function organised by the People’s Trust in the city on Sunday evening. Former editor of The Samaja, an Oriya daily, Manorama Moahapatra, managing trusteee of the trust and Orissa State secretariat member of the CPI(M), Ali Kishore Patnaik, president of the trust, Kalu Panda, were also present in the function. Citing examples of successes of implementation of pro-people policies by the Left Front Government in West Bengal, Mr Dasgupta tried to burst the myth of liberalization being promoted in India at the behest of World Bank, IMF and WTO. He said now multinational companies of imperialistic developed countries like America find their local market too saturated. In the name of liberalization the government is throwing away the protection and subsidy that was being provided to the local industries and agriculture. All restrictions for imports are being removed while exports from our country are now showing any major signs of increase, he said.
