Bangalore: Even with the energy consumption increasing to touch 133–134 million units a day, officials at the Load Despatch Centre of the Karnataka Power Transmission Corporation Ltd. (KPTCL) claimed that there was no extra load shedding to maintain the grid frequency. A senior official told The Hindu that all power generating units were running as usual. He said that nine hours of three-phase power supply and six hours of single-phase power were being maintained in the rural areas. He said that the power supply to urban areas had not been affected. With the implementation of the feeder management system, the power supply and demand was being maintained. The power supply during this summer was manageable due to the dip in power consumption in the last week of March. “The untimely rain not only helped in recharging our hydel resources but also reduced the power consumption. That put us in a comfortable position. If not for the rain, we would be in a difficult position now,” he said. The official said that if the grid frequency dips, load shedding may be taken up on rotation basis, to avoid complete blackout. He said that a few areas may be facing power shutdown owing to the maintenance work taken up by KPTCL. “A small percentage of the power shutdown may be attributed to maintenance,” he said.
