Rice, paddy worth 1 crore seized
Staff Reporter
Kakinada: Rice and paddy worth Rs 1 crore were seized from Dhanalakshmi Modern Rice Mill at Nagamallithota here by Civil Supplies Department officials on Sunday. The mill owner, P Ramanujaya, was selling rice and paddy without the requisite permits.
A case under Sec. 6 (A) of the Essential Commodities (EC) Act was booked and the matter has been reported to the Joint Collector GSRKR Vijay Kumar.
District Supply Officer PD Prakasa Rao told The Hindu that the traders can sell up to 25 per cent of their procurement without obtaining the department’s permission but beyond that they have to declare that the inventories were levy-free and failure to do so entails penal action underEC Act.
Sunday’s raid is in conformity with the Joint Collector’s instructions to conduct regular inspections to ensure that the Rs 2-a-kg rice scheme faces no hindrances on account of hoarding.
More such raids are expected in the near future, he said.
