THURAIYUR: A sprawling tank, Chinna Eri in front of the bus stand in Thuraiyur has been posing a health hazard for the residents, due to flow of sewage into it and dumping of solid wastes.

Many of the commercial establishments situated around the tank dump their waste in it, regret local residents.

The absence of bunds to the tank poses a grave threat during the floods, with the surplus waters from the tank overflowing the nearby Tiruchi – Thuraiyur highway, bringing traffic to a grinding halt.

The former president of Rotary Club of Thuraiyur T. R. Madhavan and the vice-president of the Club K. Arulanandam said that although several representations had been made to the authorities by the members of the public, nothing had materialised. They said that the waters could be best utilised for irrigation, if freed from pollution.

Mr. Madhavan said that the letting out of the sewage waters in to the tank made it the breeding ground for mosquitoes. There were two tanks ‘Periya Eri’ and ‘Chinna Eri.’ The surplus from the first tank entered into the second one during monsoon. But this channel was now more used for letting out the sewage waters from the town, thereby polluting the Chinna Eri. The setting up a water treatment plant would go a long way in conserving the tank.

Plastic wastes

They said that the deposit of plastic wastes not only posed a health hazard but also prevented the percolation of water in the area, thereby reducing the underground water table.
