Better be away from politics

Like T.N. Seshan and other Chief Election Commissioners, M.S. Gill did a good work in upholding the country’s Constitution in letter and spirit. But, his induction into the Central Cabinet mars the integrity of the members of this autonomous body. It creates in them an undesirable aspiration for political assignments in post-retirement stage.

I feel it is better to take an oath from such constitutional functionaries that they would not accept political posts in future.

Blot on society

It is shameful that incidents of boys attacking girls with knives and acid for declining their proposal to marry are alarmingly increasing.

Such things should be prevented.

The student community, the police, the college administration, the electronic and print media and others have a role in combating such incidents. Boys should understand that they have no right to ruin others’ lives.

The police should keep an eye on youngsters moving about in parks and beaches and, if necessary, counsel them.

Parents should also be aware of the behaviour of their children and take corrective measures.

A way to prevent drowning

With the scheme of engaging lifeguards and divers to save persons from drowning in the sea failing, I suggest construction of a lagoon in such a way that sea water flows into it during high tide and the flow is reversed during low tide. It could be kept clean and steel filters may be fixed at the flow point to prevent incidents of drowning. M.K. Lakshman

Secret to good health

It is observed that a lot of people between 40 and 50 years have problems like nervous disorders, diabetes, rheumatism, body pains, lack of appetite. I feel that this is due to lack of exercise. A walk for 5-10 km every day will keep them physically fit.
