NEW DLEHI: In the wake of the Supreme Court judgement empowering landlords to evict commercial tenants, several trade bodies of the Capital held a meeting on Sunday under the umbrella of the Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT). Participants at the meeting demanded the intervention of both the Union and the Delhi Governments in the matter and stated that the apex court order was not restricted to just shops but any type of commercial tenancy including industries and offices. The speakers also demanded the setting up of a joint committee of traders, tenants, landlords and officials to arrive at an amicable solution. According to CAIT secretary general Praveen Khandelwal, the issue had in it the makings of a big controversy and difference of opinion between tenants and landlords. “The trade leaders have said that both tenants and landlords will encourage mass-scale litigations. This is a tricky situation and the Delhi Government should initiate a process that brings about an amicable resolution of the issue,” said Mr. Khandelwal. The trade leaders further said that the matter had a direct bearing on the livelihood of traders. A delegation plans to meet Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
