DMK groups clash in Udumalpet
Staff Reporter
UDUMALPET: Two factions of the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam on Sunday clashed at the office of the Deputy Superintendent of Police here, over a dispute in their party elections.
When S. Easwaran, DSP, who was in civil dress, tried to pacify the factions, he sustained minor injury on his nose. It all began when K.N. Dravidamani, secretary of Kalaignar Narpani Manram, who is planning to contest for the post of town secretary of DMK, went to the DSP’s office to file a complaint on the alleged threat his group was facing.
Municipal Chairman C. Velusamy, who leads another faction, also went there with his supporters. Subsequently, both the groups attacked each other.
Meanwhile, cadres of All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Bharatiya Janata Party and Hindu Munnani blocked the road near the bus stand, seeking the arrest of those who ‘attacked’ the DSP.
Superintendent of Police, Coimbatore district, G. Karthikeyan, rushed to Udumalpet. He promised the cadres that action would be taken against the accused after an inquiry.
Mr. Karthikeyan also said the DSP was injured and had not lodged any complaint. A case had been registered about the incident based on a complaint from Mr. Dravidamani, who was admitted to the Udumalpet Government Hospital.
