V. Subramani, General Secretary, Neer Exnora: Most of the water bodies in urban areas have been encroached upon. With growing urbanisation in the suburbs, tanks or lakes may not be used for irrigation, but they still are important. The tank can be deepened and made into a pond that can serve as a reservoir for rain water run-off. The Public Works Department and the Metrowater Board took almost five years to decide who would manage 20 tanks in the city and its suburbs. It would be better if a Lake Development Authority is formed to protect the water bodies.
