Manufacturing policy by month-end

Special Correspondent

CHENNAI: The Centre is planning to formulate a manufacturing policy by the end of this month to help the country achieve a sustainable growth of 12 per cent and to increase the share of manufacturing in the gross domestic product.

Talking to The Hindu, V. Krishnamurthy, chairman, National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council, said failure to give importance to manufacturing would lead to an imbalanced growth. “We had formulated a statutory policy and, in the last three years, we were successful in raising the growth of the manufacturing sector from the routine 6-7 per cent to 12 per cent.”

“The Prime Minister has asked us to set up a small group to spell out long-term steps to be taken by the Government to promote this sector. The Secretaries of Finance, Revenue, Industry and Commerce will meet soon to formulate the policy that will provide gainful employment to 8-10 million people,” he said. Mr. Krishnamurthy said the Centre was launching a national mission for soft skill development. It was consulting officials of the Finance Ministry and the Planning Commission on how to go about it. The government could execute it on its own, or join hands with private parties. “What is worrying us is the mismatch in the skills available and the job requirements of industry. In the future, this percentage might go up, so we are planning vocational training from school, as students don’t have anything more than the bookish knowledge,” he said.
