RSS-CPI(M) stand-off in city

Leaders agree not to hold protest meetings till May 1

Parties to cooperate with investigations

Thiruvananthapuram: A tense stand-off prevailed between workers of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) in the city on Sunday. Armed men, suspected to be RSS workers, attacked a Democratic Youth Federation of India functionary, Sreekumar, at Sreevaraham around 2 p.m. Mr. Sreekumar, local committee secretary of the federation, has been hospitalised with serious injuries. His condition was reported to be stable.

The police suspect that he was attacked in retaliation for the attempt on the life of K. Mohanan, secretary of the RSS-run Anantha Asai Balasadanam Orphanage at Vanchiyoor, on Saturday.

CPI(M) workers had allegedly attacked Mr. Mohanan in retaliation for the murder of the party worker Vishnu in front of the Passport Office at Kaithamukku on April 1.

There was tension in the city on Sunday morning when more than 800 RSS workers assembled at Perunthanni. The city police went on alert and Deputy Commissioner of Police, Law and Order, M. Wahab camped for some time at the Pettah police station with a large striking force.

An RSS leader said the activists had come to attend a routine “Sangik” meeting. He said the RSS activists had dispersed peacefully after the meeting.

Peace meeting

City Police Commissioner Ravada Azad Chandrasekhar chaired a peace meeting in which RSS and CPI(M) leaders participated. Mr. Ravada said the leaders agreed not to hold any protest meetings or demonstrations till May 1. They expressed willingness to cooperate with the investigations. B.S. Rajeev, CPI(M) Vanchiyoor area committee secretary, said leaders of both parties had resolved to prevent escalation of violence. Bharatiya Janatha Party State committee member N. Sreekumar said the RSS and BJP were committed to peace.
