Thiruvananthapuram: The State government is considering tax incentives to promote ‘green’ architecture and ‘green’ buildings, Power Secretary L. Radhakrishnan said here on Sunday. The proposal has been included in the draft housing policy, he said while addressing a press conference to announce a five-day workshop on “Efficient energy management and renewable energy” from Monday here. Mr. Radhakrishnan said the policy proposed the adoption of the international LEED certification system to evaluate the environmental performance of a building and encourage sustainable, eco-friendly designs. Women delegates from seven South Asian countries are expected to participate in the workshop, organised by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Energy Management Centre (EMC), Kerala, and PA Consulting Group. The event will focus on the theme “Women in energy.” Regional programme director, South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy (SARI/Energy), S. Padmanabhan; Deputy Mission Director, USAID, Beth Hogan; and director, EMC, Dharesan Unnithan, said the workshop would provide an opportunity for women from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India to exchange ideas and share best practices.
