IT-enabled school wins praise

Staff Reporter

The lower primary school at Perumbalam in Alappuzha utilises IT for counselling and cultural activities.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Information Technology (IT)-enabled educational activities launched by the Perumbalam North Lower Primary School in Alappuzha received special mention at the recently concluded two-day educational seminar and teachers’ meet organised in the capital.

The event, which saw the presentation of over 140 papers with 10 papers from each district, showed how various schools from these districts have made learning innovative, interesting and enjoyable for the students.

For instance, at the North L.P.S. in Alappuzha the services of IT is also used for strengthening the activities of the Parent Teacher Association, counselling and cultural activities.

Similarly the ‘smart class’ room project launched by the corporation of Alappuzha and IT-enabled educational programmes initiated by the Ponmala Tribal Higher Secondary School in Idukki drew encomiums from the participants.

The presentations by the representatives of various schools revealed that the focus of education has shifted from the traditional rote learning to a more ‘comprehensive development of a candidate’ for most schools.

Emphasis was also given on providing training in various extra-curricular activities such as filmmaking, script writing and in publishing newsletters and notices.

Teacher-student bond

Attempts were also made to improve the existing camaraderie between students and teachers by organising special visits by teachers to the homes of their students on holidays.

The interaction helped teachers to gauge a first-hand experience of the financial and family background of their students and provide them necessary assistance and counselling.

Efforts made by the Government High School, Edathala, Eranakulam to make mathematics more endearing to the student community was discussed at the seminar.

The school adopted a novel method in teaching the subject, by exploring the possibility of linking mathematics with the day to day issues confronted by the students.

Conducting rallies and exhibitions on mathematics, organising mathematics labs, camps and festivals were some of the other initiatives conducted by various schools to dispel the fear for the subject among students.

The speakers also observed that schools such as Nedumkandam Government L.P.School, which had been grappling with the problem of dwindling attendance, had been able to reverse the problem by making their academic instruction lively with the help of theatre.

The role of theatre as medium for improving the literary and linguistic skills of the students was highlighted by the participants. Some of the other topics discussed during the seminar included panchayat and schools, visual lessons in schools, and historical studies.
