Ranihat School wins cricket tourney

CUTTACK: Helped by a fine half century by middle order batsman Mohammed Akram (58 runs) and taking five crucial wickets by giving only 26 runs, the Ranihat High School boys won the fifth PVR Murthy inter-school cricket tournament by defeating Jobra Municipal High School boys by 42 runs at the Engineering school ground here on Monday.

The famous local club—Union Sporting organised the tournament in which a total of 16 school teams of the city participated. Former India speedster and ICC match referee Javagal Srinath joined the final match as chief guest and distributed the prizes along with school and mass education minister Santosh Sahu, Orissa DGP Gopal Nanda, and east Coast railway sports officer D K Samantray.

Put to bat first, the winners scored 168 runs for the loss of seven wickets in the allotted 25 overs. Needing to score at 6.76 runs per over for a win, the Jobra boys were all out in 22.4 overs with only 126 runs on the board.

For his magnificent performance with bat and ball, Akram was declared man-of-the-match. Akram also took away the man-of-the-series award for his overall performance in the tournament. Akram scored 254 runs in all the five matches he played and took 23 wickets to become the undisputed claimant for the titles.

The organisers felicitated three outstanding sportspersons. The club felicitated Rabi Biswal, a physically challenged body-builder, Lala Patra, a veteran footballer and young cricketer Asmit Rout with Rs. 5000 each.
