Charges against Marik: probe officer appointed

Special Correspondent

BHUBANESWAR: Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Monday said that Santosh Kumar, member, Board of Revenue, has been appointed Inquiry Officer for initiation of departmental proceedings against suspended Indian Police Service officer Sanjeev Marik.

Talking to presspersons here, Mr. Patnaik said that the report of the Lok Pal, who probed into the alleged nexus between Mr. Marik and some criminals would form part of the departmental proceedings.

The Lok Pal had submitted his report to the government a few days ago and it was said that Mr. Marik had been found guilty in the matter. Mr. Marik, an Inspector General Police, had been placed under suspension in May last year in the wake of allegations that he extended help to a few individuals to meet some criminals from Bihar who were lodged in the Bhadrak jail.

As regards the latest allegations of police-criminal nexus that had come to light in the wake of the murder of Biranchi Das, Mr. Patnaik said that the Lok Pal had the powers to conduct an inquiry into such matters.

The government a few days ago had taken a decision to request the Lok Pal to probe into the alleged nexus between the police and gangster raja Acharya, prime suspect in the Biranchi Das murder.

The police have not been able to arrest the gangster so far. Das was shot dead outside the Orissa Judo Association on April 13 evening.

Meanwhile, security has been provided to two senior bureaucrats as a precautionary measure. Security has also been provided to the family of the victim coach and Oriya actress Leslie Tripathy, whose name figured in the controversy involving her and gangster Raja Acharya.
