Chitradurga: Unexpected rainfall has left several banana growers in Sondekola and Godabanahal villages of Chitradurga district distraught. The heavy rain, coupled with thunderstorms, hit some parts of the district on Sunday and destroyed a large number of banana plantations. Heavy wind uprooted the plants resulting in large-scale crop destruction. According to a rough estimate, over 25 acres of banana plantation have been destroyed in the villages. Although the district administration is yet to assess the loss, farmers believe that it is around Rs. 20 lakh. “I was hoping for a good crop this season, as I had invested Rs. 6 lakh in my three-and-a-half acre plot of farmland. But, I have been left disappointed,” said Santosh Kumar, a farmer from Godabanahal village. He said that some areca nut crop had also been destroyed. Another farmer, Eshwarappa, whose crop has been affected, said that after the rain, he had lost a substantial yield. “Now, all I have to do is to cut the damaged trees and throw them on the land along with the fruits,” he added.
