Plastic bags below 50 microns banned

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The government has banned plastic carry bags and bottles below thickness of 50 microns.

An official note issued here on Monday said that the government has already banned plastic carry bags and bottles below thickness of 30 microns, but it did not yield the desired results and hence it was decided to raise it to 50 microns.

As per the notification issued by the government, production, sale, procurement, use and distribution would be treated as punishable offences.

Those violating the ban would be liable for punishment up to five years and a fine of Rs.1 lakh. Secretaries of local self-government institutions have been authorised to enforce the ban. Those who already possess plastic goods below thickness of 50 microns would be permitted to use the existing stock for a month, the release said. — Special Correspondent
