COIMBATORE: Vice-Chancellor of Bharathiar University G. Thiruvasagam has announced that the norms for selection of professors to guide doctoral students will be relaxed. According to him, there is a shortfall in the number of guides compared to the students pursuing Ph. D. “This shortfall is present in all departments. The Syndicate has approved the relaxation in these norms to enable more number of professors become guides,” the Vice-Chancellor said. New guidelinesAs per the new guidelines, Ph. D. holders need to have a year’s experience to apply for the post of a guide. They should ensure release of a publication within three years of finishing their Ph. D. Professors and lecturers with this eligibility can apply for the position of guides in the university. This is expected to increase the number of guides. With the introduction of the part-time Ph. D. programme for professionals, there are many who have shown interest. Some postgraduates who have completed their degree years ago are unable to fulfil the eligibility criteria of 55 marks. “Those days it was very difficult to get high scores in arts subjects. Hence, some aspirants have requested me to relax the norms for admission. I have decided to reduce the cut-off to 50 marks from 55,” Mr. Thiruvasagam said. The Vice-Chancellor also added that the B. Ed. examinations from the coming academic year would follow the semester pattern, vis-À-vis the annual pattern that was being followed so far.
