Farmers say ‘pisanam’ paddy was completely damaged due to rain TIRUNELVELI: Farmers of Melapuththanaeri and Paaraikulam, who suffered crop damage consequent to the recent unseasonal rain submitted a petition to Collector G. Prakash during a grievance day meeting at the Collectorate on Monday, seeking adequate relief. The petitioners, comprising a good number of women farmers carrying damaged paddy in their hands, said more than 300 farmers of Melapuththanaeri and Paaraikulam were facing huge loss after the ‘pisanam’ paddy was completely damaged. “While the landlords of our villages can easily get the compensation, for reasons best known to them, we cannot get the relief till now. Some of the landholders, who have leased out their farm lands, have also received compensation even as the farmer who actually had cultivated paddy in the particular land cannot get the relief as he cannot produce the land documents,” said S. Chelladurai, a farmer from Melapuththanaeri. The revenue officials should conduct a survey afresh at Melapuththanaeri and Paaraikulam to identify the really affected, they pleaded. Another group of 13 farmers from Chettikurichi under Azhagiyapandiapuram village panchayat, who came to the Collectorate with badly damaged sunflower plants, said they did not get the relief even after the village administrative officer inspected their fields. A group of 60 women from Rajakudiyiruppu in Palayamkottai submitted a petition to Mr. Prakash seeking free house site pattas and the villagers of Nadupillaiyaarkulam handed over a petition asking for free colour televisions sets, gas stoves, ration shop, community hall, library and concrete road to cremation ground. Residents of Kokkirakulam, led by their village head, S. Parathaesi, sought action against those who defaced the posters carrying the photo of B.R. Ambedkar and withdrawal of “fake cases” filed against some of the Dalits from their area in this connection.
