Meet on gastroenterology discusses treatment of liver diseases

SALEM: Advancements in early detection and treatment of liver and pancreatic diseases were highlighted at the International Conference and Live Workshop Gastro Con 2008 organised by Manipal Hospital here on Sunday.

Participating in the conference, Professor Mohammed Rela, a renowned liver transplant surgeon from London who figures in the Guinness Book of World Records for performing a liver transplantation operation on a five-day-old baby, delivered a lecture on innovations in liver surgery.

Padma Vibhushan Professor N. Rangabashyam spoke on surgical practice in the new millennium, the ethical duties of a surgeon, and preparing surgeons for future technology.

He stressed the importance of continuous learning and skill upgradation.

Professor K.R. Palanisamy delivered a lecture on Acute pancreatitis. Dr. D. Nageshwar Reddy from Hyderabad spoke on Endoscopy Today and Tomorrow. Dr. A.S. Soin from New Delhi spoke on Living Related Liver Transplantation.

The organisers honoured Dr. Rangabashyam with the Teacher of Teachers Award during the conference. The Outstanding Indian Award was given to Mr. Mohammed Rela. Professor R. Surendran was presented with the Lifetime Role Model award.

The Stars of Salem award was given to K.N. Rao, R. Krishnachetty, G. Soodamani, P. Shanmukham and A.P. Ramasamy. Laparoscopic, endoscopic and open surgery procedures for treating liver and pancreatic diseases were telecast live from Manipal Hospital to the conference venue.

Good response

The conference attracted over 1,000 doctors and house surgeons from Salem, Namakkal, Erode, Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Vilupuram districts, its Organising Chairman K.R. Prakasam said.
