This Day That Age
Vice-Admiral Sir Stephen Carlill, the outgoing Chief of the Indian Naval Staff, has been made Honorary Vice-Admiral in the Indian Navy. Admiral Carlill is the first Honorary Vice-Admiral of the Indian Navy. The letter of appointment signed by the President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad, said, “in recognition of our very valuable service to the Indian Navy, I have great pleasure in appointing you to the Honorary rank of Vice-Admiral and I take this opportunity of thanking you for the unsparing efforts you have devoted to the organisation and the efficiency of our navy during your tenure as Chief of Naval Staff." Rear-Admiral Ram Dass Katari, who will be promoted Vice-Admiral when he assumes his new appointment, will take over on that day from Sir Stephen Carlill. This will complete the process of Indianisation of the top commands of the three Services. Admiral Carlill, who took over the command in July 1955, is the ninth British officer to hold this high appointment since the Navy in its present form came into being in 1934, and the fourth since its reorganisation after independence.
