dated April 22, 1958: Importance of Sanskrit

Dr. Suniti Kumar Chatterji, well-known scholar and Chairman of the West Bengal Legislative Council, addressing in Sanskrit the annual convocation of the Bihar Sanskrit Samiti in Patna on April 20, pleaded for giving Sanskrit the status of an official language side by side with English and Hindi. Dr. Chatterji who was Chairman of the Sanskrit Commission said the Commission had already made a recommendation to this effect and had also suggested that Sanskrit should be made a compulsory subject of study in the high schools. Otherwise a great injustice would be done to the Indian youth by removing from their minds the atmosphere of Sanskrit which was permeating all the modern Indian languages excepting a few, he said. The place of honour which Sanskrit acquired for itself in the Indian science for 3,000 years or more could be easily retained not only within India but also in its relation to the entire outside world vis-À-vis the other great languages of the world. Sanskrit formed a link to the lands of the west.
