COLOMBO: Sri Lanka’s air force on Monday claimed to have bombed three Sea Tiger boats in the Alampil area in Mullaithivu. Separately, army troops launched a pre-dawn attack and captured a LTTE stronghold called “Lima Base – 3,” east of Kattankulam in Mannar. The Defence Ministry said seven LTTE cadres were killed and several others were injured in a “surprise attack” launched around 4.35 am. A stretch of about 1300 m was also under troops control as the LTTE cadres fled the area in a face of heavy fire power launched by the advancing troops, it said. In a related development, the Army “categorically” ridiculed the LTTE’s “blatant attempts” to blame it for the Sunday murder of Rev Fr. M.X. Karunaratnam on the Mallavi-Vavunikulam road, about 50 km north of Wanni in Mullaithivu district. “The LTTE upon this unfortunate demise, as is the case in many instances, has been hell-bent on feeding its mouthpieces worldwide and attributes the incident to the Army, with a view to tarnishing its image and trying to hold it responsible for this crime, particularly in the wake of negative criticism the LTTE was receiving regarding the recent holy Madhu church episode,” the army said.
