KANNUR: Bayelsa United posted its second win in as many days in the second E.K. Nayanar Gold Cup football tournament. The Nigerians beat a fighting North Imphal Sporting Association (NISA) 1-0 at the Municipal Jawahar Stadium here on Monday night, riding on an 84th minute strike by substitute E. Tobi Gariga. The Nigerians looked to attack from the beginning and even earned a penalty kick, as Okpose Martins, who had a great game, was felled by M. Abhiraj in the 43rd minute. But the feeble strike from the spot by Kenneth Bassey was stopped by the NISA custodian L. Ashok Singh, who was later named the Man-of-the-Match. The second half began with Manipur side looking more aggressive, with Sangkar Singh looking particularly impressive up front. Just when the Nigerians seemed to be tiring a bit, came the goal. It was masterminded by Martins, who deceived the NISA defence with his delightful run down the right and set up the ball nicely for Gariga, who did no mistake from close in. On Tuesday, Instituto takes on Air India.
