Kazan: The defeat against the Netherlands Antilles has put the Indian women’s team in a spot of bother in the Olympic hockey qualifiers now in progress here. After a 3-1 victory over Russia in the opener, the Indians suffered a shock defeat against Netherlands Antilles by the odd goal in three. India takes on Belgium on Tuesday after a day’s rest. United States, the favourite to win the six-nation competition, expectedly leads the table with six points. Next is the Netherlands Antilles with the same number of points, followed by Belgium (3), France (3), India (3) and Russia (0). On Sunday, Belgium beat France 5-0 and the United States defeated Russia 7-0.
At Azerbaijan, on Sunday, the home team lost to Spain in the final by the odd goal in five and conceded the Olympic spot to the winner. Spain became the 10th team to make the grade. Two more spots will be decided from the ongoing tournament at Kazan and the third qualifier at Victoria (Canada) will be held from April 26 to May. The teams that have qualified are: China, Japan, South Africa, Argentina, Germany, Netherlands, Great Britain, New Zealand, and Australia.
