BANGALORE: The Sports Writers Association of Bangalore (SWAB) has announced its annual awards for 2006-07. The best sportsman and best sportswoman awards went to the National champion swimmer, Rehan Poncha, and Chitra Magimairaj, the World billiards champion, respectively. It was also decided to give mementoes to people who have been helping the media and serving sports for a number of years (voluntarily in many cases as a token of appreciation): PSB Naidu (athletics), D. Singh (basketball), Chikchennaiah (football), Nagesh (swimming) and Shanker (cricket). It was also decided to felicitate four senior sports journalists for their contribution over the years: R. Arvindam, Rajan Bala, P.R. Vishwanath and Devnath. The awards function will be held on June 1. The awardees: Best team: Bangalore Lions (winner of PHL); Best sportsman (Sr): Rehan Poncha (swimming); Best sportswoman (Sr): Chitra Magimairaj (billiards). Best sportsman (Jr): Ajay Patil (badminton); Best sportswoman (Jr): Pooja Alva (swimming). Special awards: R. Vinay Kumar (cricket) and Rohan Bopanna (tennis). — Special Correspondent
