BEML beats Postal; shares lead with KSP

BANGALORE: BEML Earth Movers snatched full points, thanks to a penalty against a determined Postal in the group A league match of the Puttaiah Memorial football tournament for Super Division teams at the football stadium here today.

The 1-0 win put BEML on par with KSP on points tally but with a match against group leaders ASC to play.

KSP, which had earlier in the day outclassed ADE 5-0, is sitting pretty on a higher goal average (13-2) but even a draw would suffice to see BEML through to the semifinals.

ASC is on top with nine points and a match in hand.

BEML did show urgency but could not score.

Ravindran shines

Neither Gopi nor new recruit Abdulla Hamza could threaten and on the couple of occasions that the long rangers headed towards goal, Postal custodian Ravindran was up to the task.

A Ricky Joy 40-yarder was acrobatically kept away by Ravindran in the first half and twice in quick succession Naveen Babu, the gutsy Postal defender effected saves.

However, in the 73rd minute a Tikken Singh floater into the box saw Ramesh handling the ball and the resultant penalty was slotted home in great style by Sanath Kumar.

Earlier, KSP completed its engagements in thumping fashion with a 5-0 win over ADE.

Karthik (7th and 50th), Sampath Kumar (23rd and 55th) and Srinath (58th) accounted for the goals.

Poor run

ADE has lost all its matches so far and will play Postal in the final league encounter on Wednesday.
