LONDON: Michael Owen scored twice in the first half on Sunday to continue his return to form and give Newcastle a 2-0 English Premier League football win over local rival Sunderland. Owen, who is trying to force his way into England coach Fabio Capello’s plans, scored with a fourth-minute header and penalty kick just before half-time to take his tally to six goals in seven games and 15 for the season.
Newcastle’s six-match unbeaten run has lifted it to 42 points, behind 11th-place Tottenham only on goal difference, and put it clear of relegation. Sunderland is six points back in 15th, but should survive since it is five points above the relegation zone with four rounds to play. City beats PortsmouthIn another match, Darius Vassell and Martin Petrov put Manchester City 2-0 up against Portsmouth inside 13 minutes before John Utaka got a goal back for the visitor. But Portsmouth defender Hermann Hreidarsson was sent off in the 41st for a block on Vassell, and Benjani Mwaruwari rounded off the scoring in the 74th — although he declined to celebrate the goal against his former club. City moved up to 55 points, two fewer than Portsmouth. The results: Newcastle 2 (Owen 4, 45-pen) bt Sunderland 0; Manchester City 3 (Vassell 11, Petrov 13, Benjani 74) bt Portsmouth 1 (Utaka 24). — Agencies
