Poll observers appointed

CHAMARAJANAGAR: The Election Commission of India has appointed five observers to assist the authorities in ensuring free and fair elections in the district that goes to the polls on May 10.

There are four general observers, one for each Assembly segment in the district, and one expenditure observer. The general observers are S.K. Goel (Hanur), Subhash Chandra (Kollegal), Vikas Sitaramji Mahale (Chamarajanagar) and S.R. Pawar (Gundlepet). Gangadhar Panda is the expenditure observer for all the four assembly segments .

Meanwhile, six nominations were filed in the district — one in Kollegal, two in Chamarajanagar and three in Hanur. No nominations were filed in Gundlepet constituency.

With this, the number of nominations filed has become nine.

The former Minister Mahadev, who left the Congress and joined the BJP recently, filed his nomination papers from the Chamarajanagar constituency amid opposition from a section of the BJP workers.

Siddarju filed papers for the Chamarajanagar constituency as an independent candidate.

D. Somanna filed his papers from Hanur as a BJP candidate. P. Kamaraju and M. Rajendra filed nominations as independents from the constituency. Mahender filed nomination papers from Kollegal as a BJP candidate. Mr. Mahender will face competition from Congress

candidate R. Druvanarayan and Janara Dal (Secular) candidate A.R. Krishnamurthy.
