NEW DELHI: The Left parties on Monday reiterated their determination to continue to put pressure on the UPA government to take concrete steps for controlling the rising prices of essential commodities and foodgrains. Addressing the press here, the CPI(M) leader Basudeb Acharia regretted that Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar had failed to respond to the demands and suggestions of the Left parties in checking the spiralling prices. Mr. Pawar had given just one assurance in the Rajya Sabha about restoring the original quota of foodgrains to the States, Mr. Acharia said. Mr. Pawar had simply said that “within 10 days prices would be brought down.” He reiterated the Left suggestions of strengthening the Public Distribution System, restructuring of tax on petroleum products and banning futures trading. The Communist Party of India expressed the hope that the government would not limit itself to a few fiscal measures.
