Install traffic signal

The recent accident and death of six people of a family on the Chennai Bypass Road in the city shows that there is an urgent need for installation of traffic signal near Palpannai. The city already has high-speed dome cameras installed near Junction and other spots in and around the city. I request the authorities to take action and save innumerable lives.

No water in coach

My cousin travelled to Chennai from Tiruchi by Mangalore Express on April 16. There was no water available in S-5 compartment. One of the passengers in this compartment and myself brought this to the notice of the Station Manager at Tiruchi Junction. He assured to fill the water tank immediately. But nothing was done. My cousin informed me that the passengers again brought this to the notice of the TTE who assured to take steps for getting water at Villuppuram junction. But no water was filled till the train reached Chennai Egmore.

Ticket counter

Srirangam Railway station has several amenities provided for the commuters. The long felt need for raising the level of platforms for enabling the passengers to get into trains and get down was attended in a major portion of the station.

But the Tiruchi railway division has not so far attended the complaint of passengers with regard to opening the third and fourth booking counters. The fourth counter is closed on most days. Senior citizens and commuters have to wait for a long time since only the third counter is opened for receiving the applications for the issue of tickets.

Domestic gas refills

Life of middle class people has become miserable after oil companies cracked the whip on diversion of domestic LPG cylinders to hotels and autorickshaws and insisted on ration card entry for families. On the other hand, the State Government cut PDS kerosene supply even for single cylinder connections. Distributors are insisting on a 21-day interval between booking of refills and another 10 days for supplying. Without any alternative subsidised source of fuel, it has become very difficult for households. Since the LPG supply follows the 30-day cycle, people are left with no alternative than returning to firewood and charcoal days. Hence it is imperative on oil companies to reduce the booking time to 15 days between refills.

25 paise coins refused

This is with reference to the clarification from the Reserve Bank of India that coins of small denominations are still legal tender. But all shops in Tiruchi and newspaper vendors in Junction and bus stands refuse to take or give 25 paise coins. Petrol bunks and gas agencies also do not return small change.

Wasting money

The roads in Thillainagar and the newly laid road in Pulimandapam area of Srirangam are in a bad condition. The Commissioner, the Mayor and the Councillors maintain a stoic silence. It is really a deplorable situation where public money is wasted in the name of laying and relaying roads.

Old milk being sold

The selling price of the milk differs from shop to shop. Although State Government has fixed the price, not a single vendor follows the government order.

Milk is sold for Rs.23 per litre. Old stocks are sold, leading to milk spoilage.

It is really painful to note that the customers are least bothered and are often cheated. The date and time of packing should be indicated on the sachets so that customers can identify the quality. Surprise checkings at frequent intervals are mandatory in all the depots.

Fence please

The move by the Corporation to fence a substantial portion of the Karur Bypass Road deserves appreciation in view of the innumerable instances of two wheeler mishaps in the stretch. The fencing has provided the much needed security to motorists driving through the stretch. In the same way, the T V Koil-Railway Overbridge stretch should also be fenced as this road is too narrow and steep making it risky for all vehicles. I request the authorities to take immediate steps to erect fencing there.

Energy search

There is a mushroom growth of housing complexes and satellite towns. Consequently, there is a consistent and growing demand for power. Apparently, the quantum of power generation through various modes does not match the demand.

It is most unfortunate that Left activism has almost derailed the process of jacking up nuclear power generation. Perhaps scientists can generate wind power by setting up floating stations not far away from the shore. We should also concentrate on generation of bio-energy through cultivation of jatropha and such other plants in a very big way.
