Vice-Chancellor’s term coming to an end by the month-end Physical Education Unit to be upgraded VISAKHAPATNAM: The Executive Council of Andhra University on Monday resolved to implement the GO issued by the State government increasing the dearness allowance to teachers from 30.14 per cent to 35.79 per cent and also approved many other topics listed on the agenda. This Executive Council meeting was the last to be chaired by Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy, whose term is coming to an end by this month-end. As a Rs. 1-crore project on Kolleru lake was almost sanctioned, it was decided to provide additional space for the same in the Centre for Bay of Bengal Studies. With the Government lifting ban on providing employment on compassionate grounds, a decision was taken to take in family members of the deceased employees. Out of the 95 applicants, 89 were found eligible, Registrar P. Vijaya Prakash informed at a press conference organised by the EC members. Backlog vacanciesThe appointment of teachers in the backlog vacancies and also in the posts that were not filled during the interviews held for 176 posts, in the newly-established Centre for Exclusive and Inclusive Policies, NSS Coordinator, NSS Training Coordinator and Lecturer-cum-Coordinator, was approved by the EC. However, only 25 teacher posts out of the total of 69 in the backlog vacancies and other vacancies could be filled up. The interviews were completed on Saturday. The Physical Education Unit would be upgraded into a department and a B.P. Ed. programme would be introduced. Surprise decisionRector Beela Satyanarayana, EC Members -- S.V.V.S. Ramachandra Raju, I. Muralikrishna, Routhu Setharamaswamy, B. Sridevi, C. Chandrasekhar and B. Ganga Rao also spoke. Members of the Executive Council of Andhra University maintain confidentiality and never talk to press after a meeting of the council. The decisions taken during a meeting are made public only on some occasions when the administration feels that they need publicity. A press note is issued on such occasions. But the members of the present EC made a surprise decision on Monday after the council meeting and called for a press conference. This, the EC members said was to place on record the achievements of the university under the stewardship of Vice-Chancellor L. Venugopal Reddy during the last three years.“It is true that the EC members never talk to the press after attending a meeting. But this meeting was the last meeting to be chaired by him as his term is coming to an end. He has done a lot of good work and we thought the same must be highlighted. So we called for a press conference,” the EC members said when asked for the reason to hold the press meet. AchievementsThey issued a statement highlighting his achievements. The praise showered on AU and Prof. Reddy by the Peer Committee of NAAC which concluded its visit a couple of days ago was highlighted. The Science Congress, Economic Congress, Commerce Congress, removing of backlog of convocations, filling up of teachers’ vacancies, the MoUs AU had entered into etc. were mentioned in the list. But no resolution was passed asking the government to extend his term, the EC members and Rector Beela Satyanarayana said. They faced some difficult questions on the National Council of Teachers Education not recognising the M.A. (education) programme and Registrar P. Vijaya Prakash and others had to give a lengthy explanation. Students with this qualification are now eligible to appear for DSC interviews and also name of the course is being changed to M.Ed. from this year.
