Bangalore: L.M. Patnaik, formerly professor with the Department of Computer Science and Automation at the Indian Institute of Science (IISc.), has taken over as Vice-Chancellor of the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), a deemed university at Pune. During his 37-year tenure at IISc., Prof. Patnaik’s research work has focussed on parallel and distributed computing, computer architecture, theoretical computer science, real-time systems, soft computing, and computational neuroscience. As a recognition of his contributions in the areas of electronics, informatics, telematics and automation, he was awarded the Dr. Vikram Sarabhai Research Award in 1989. He is founder-chairman of the Indian Transputer User Group, presently named Advanced Computing and Communications Society. He is editor of the Journal of Computer Science and Informatics, and the Journal of the Indian Institute of Science. DIAT is a deemed university in Pune, with a focus on education, training and research in advanced technology with a view to strengthen national security and self-reliance.
