Staff Reporter

Bangalore: Two young men drowned in a lake near Bidadi on Sunday when their coracle capsized. The police gave the names of the deceased as Nandakumar (22) and Sreenivas (25). The police said that victims along with other four friends had been to Ramasandrakere on Sunday. They got into a coracle which was on the shore and started paddling themselves without hiring a professional rower. Soon the coracle overturned and Nandakumar and Sreenivas drowned while the remaining four swam to safety. The body of Nandakumar has been recovered but the police are yet to fish out the body of Sreenivas.

Two shops were destroyed after they caught fire in Ranga Reddy Colony on Airport Road. The police said that the two shops — Universal Furnitures and a hardware shop — caught fire on Sunday night. The fire which broke around 10.30 p.m. was extinguished around 1 a.m. on Monday. The shops owners Asin and Sadiq told the police that they had incurred a loss of Rs 15 lakh to Rs. 20 lakh.

Suicide

A 28-year-old homemaker committed suicide at her residence in Pooluramma slum on Sunday.

The police gave the name of the deceased as Lima Rose. The police said that Anthony Das, husband of the deceased, was an alcoholic and was unemployed.

He used to allegedly abuse his wife. This reportedly pushed Lima to take the extreme step. Anthony Das was sleeping at home when the incident occurred.

Arrested

The Girinagar police team led by Inspector M.C. Dasharathamurthy arrested five members of a gang that was allegedly involved in the murder of “STD” Kumar, a member of a rival gang who was facing criminal charges. Deputy Commissioner of Police (South) S. Ravi said “STD” Kumar was murdered on April 14 allegedly by C.M. Vinay (24), who wanted to take revenge for his brother’s murder. In February, Vinay came out of Bangalore Central Prison after serving a sentence in another case of murder. He, along with four others, murdered “STD” Kumar in Vinobha Nagar in Girinagar police station limits.

In another case, the police have arrested four persons allegedly involved in a case of murder.
