Minister assures safe passage

Special Correspondent

JAIPUR: Union Tourism and Culture Minister Ambika Soni on Monday said India would ensure safety and security of foreign tourists visiting the country. Both the Centre and the State governments were concerned and seized of the problem, she said while assuring better policing of tourism destinations with the induction of the retired personnel from the armed forces.

“Each such case is a blot on tourism,” said Ms. Soni addressing the delegates at the Great Indian Travel Bazaar 2008, a pan-Indian travel mart focusing on in-bound tourism. “There have been worries about security and safety of the foreign tourists visiting after cases from Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and of late the much hyped case in Goa,” she noted.

The gathering at the event, organised by Rajasthan Tourism and FICCI, included 160 foreign tour operators from 42 countries and representatives of 14 States. Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje inaugurated the three-day bazaar and presided over the inaugural session.

“We have not turned a blind eye to these incidents. We are sensitive to the issue and strong steps are being taken,” Ms. Soni said.
