Governor lauds Energy Management Centre

Energy clinics to spread awareness

Thiruvananthapuram: Electricity Minister A.K. Balan has said that peak-time power consumption in the State has come down by 150 MW to 200 MW.

He was delivering the presidential address at the inaugural function of a workshop on ‘Efficient energy management and renewable energy,’ organised by the Energy Management Centre, Kerala and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), here on Monday.

Mr. Balan said the sustained campaign of launched by the Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) to promote energy conservation was paying dividends.

“The high peak-time consumption pattern in Kerala is a matter of concern. Last year, the peak load demand from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. went up to 2,742 MW.

It is in this context that the KSEB launched the mass campaign.” He said the reduction in peak-time demand would translate into supply of quality power.

Governor R.L. Bhatia, who inaugurated the workshop, lauded the Energy Management Centre for its initiative in introducing energy clinics to spread awareness of the need to conserve power.

He said the decentralised programme using women volunteers would help reduce energy consumption.

In her keynote address, Beth Hogan, Deputy Mission Director of USAID, said energy conservation activities deserved special focus on women because of their crucial role in the household energy sector.

L. Radhakrishnan, Power Secretary; S. Padmanabhan, Regional Programme Director of the South Asia Regional Initiative for Energy (SARI/ Energy); and Dharesan Unnithan, director of the Energy Management Centre, spoke.

The five-day workshop will provide an opportunity to representatives from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India to exchange ideas and share best practices in energy conservation.
